A tool for self-expression and finding meaning

Youth work – a tool for self-expression and finding meaning

FunkOn has never been just a company that paints walls. While we have become one of the most important mural teams in the Nordic countries, we have also grown as a social actor. As Finland’s leading organizer of street art hobbies, we produce more than 1,000 guided hours per year.

Youth work is an inherent part of our activities. In addition to their creative profession, many of our team members have been trained in the social sector, child protection or as teachers. It is clear to us that we should offer our expertise to young people and share what is relevant to us.

Street art hobbies

Street art hobbies can be individual workshops or weekly hobbies throughout the academic year. Individual workshops teach the basics of graffiti and street art by drawing and painting. In hobbies that last for the academic year, young people meet with a professional artist once a week to practice a variety of different forms of street art, and above all to learn to express themselves. The activities are always tailored to the target group. All youth work at FunkOn is always free for young people.

Special support work

A significant part of our youth work is challenging special support work. We have worked with several municipalities to develop their capacity to meet young people in need of special support.

In connection with the Finnish model for leisure activities, we have created a street art activity model, where students with special support can, in addition to painting skills, complete elective studies with the help of street art lessons, and thereby complete their high school studies. In recent years, hundreds of students from special schools and hospital schools in the Helsinki metropolitan area have been able to take advantage of FunkOn’s street art activities in their school performance and graduate from high school. In addition to art and study, social work is always a big part of the activities, where the aim is to create a trusting relationship with young people that supports their growth and development.

Our goal is to expand the model nationwide throughout Finland and in the future to Sweden, so that as many young people as possible, regardless of their challenges, have equal opportunities to realize themselves and enjoy everyday life.
