”An otter floating in space among blueberries… why didn’t I come up with that idea myself?”

Customer: Swedish Transport Administration Trafikverket

Target group: Gothenburg residents

Objective: To improve well-being in the Skår residential neighborhood in the middle of long-term traffic construction in the area

Concept development
The Swedish Transport Administration Trafikverket wanted to bring color and well-being to the Skår area of Gothenburg, where the ongoing expansion of the transport infrastructure will have a long-term impact on the environment. The solution was to propose a large mural on the construction site fence. The aim was to create a work that would appeal to families with children in particular and bring joy and imagination to the environment.

During the ideation phase, our team wanted to include Nordic elements and a touch of humor. Quickly, the discussions gave rise to the idea of a space where blueberries were floating instead of planets and with a space otter in the middle of everything. This is how the concept of Otter Space finally came about.

Execution
The mural, measuring over 4 x 40 meters, was created in four days by two artists and a photographer. Rainy days forced them to work partly at night so that the work was completed on schedule.

The finished work focuses on an otter floating in space, surrounded by blueberries the size of planets. The mural is painted in the colors of the rainbow at both ends, which frame the whole and bring it to life. The title of the work, Otter Space, was implemented with retrofuturistic typography.

End Result
Trafikverket described the work as one of the best murals they had commissioned, and it was also enthusiastically received by local residents, especially families with children. The project produced a lot of real-time media content for social media channels as well as for marketing later.

Trafikverket Project Leader Hans Ivanoff described the work as follows:

”An otter floating in space among blueberries… why didn’t I come up with that idea myself?” However, a genius artwork by Funk On Team that feels as obvious as can be. The painting on the West Link wall is 4 meters high and 40 meters long. Must see in reality for the Otter Space experience.” – Hans Ivanoff, Trafikverket Project Leader
