Candy, graffiti, and a little local flavor.
CANDY CITY
Implementation
The store owner wanted to involve a local artist in the project, and FunkOn’s team had just the right person for the job: Hyvinkää-based graffiti and mural artist Pete Sokura.
The murals were completed over four nights, while the store was closed. Each evening, the work areas were carefully covered and protected, and all coverings were removed before the store reopened in the morning. Most of the paintings were created using water-based spray paints, with extra ventilation running overnight. This allowed the store to remain open to customers throughout the project.
The Final Result
Candy City’s candy, snack, and ice cream sections each received their own hand-painted graffiti artwork. The paintings also extend beyond the department to a wall visible from the shopping mall corridor.
Together, the graffiti, store fixtures, and lighting create Candy City’s new look. The colors and artwork in each section help customers navigate the space and find what they’re looking for.
FunkOn documented the painting process and the finished store, producing photo and video content for the client’s marketing and communications.
Looking for eye-catching graffiti or mural art for your store or commercial space?
Client: K-Citymarket Hyvinkää, Kesko
In collaboration with: Franz Design, TJT-Kaluste
Target Audience: K-Citymarket Hyvinkää customers
Objective: Create hand-painted graffiti artwork for the new Candy City section as part of the store renovation, giving the space its own visual identity and helping distinguish the candy, snack, and ice cream areas.
Concept Development
K-Citymarket Hyvinkää introduced a new Candy City section featuring hand-painted graffiti and murals. The artwork combines candy and snack themes, graffiti culture, and references to the local city of Hyvinkää.
FunkOn designed the artwork based on the vision of Franz Design and the store owner. The candy, snack, and ice cream areas each received their own color schemes and graffiti designs. The candy section features shades of pink and colorful tags, the snack section uses yellow tones, and the ice cream area follows an icy blue “Freezing Zone” theme.
A large CANDY CITY graffiti piece, with letters made up of different sweets, was designed for a wall visible from the shopping mall corridor.
Local references were also included in the artwork. The snack section features a dripping cheddar cheese-inspired 05800 graffiti piece, referencing Hyvinkää’s postal code. Other details include H-TOWN and KCM, a three-letter graffiti crew name inspired by K-Citymarket. Candy and snack references appear in smaller tags such as NAM NAM, MUMS, and YUMMY, alongside Finnish ice cream-themed lettering including JÄÄÄTELÖ, TÖTTERÖ, and FREEEEZING.
Design mockups were created to show how the artwork would work with the store fixtures, colors, and illuminated signage. The finished murals closely matched the original plans.
